Judy & Gregg Murray

Born and raised in Canada, Judy had a love and curiosity for wildlife and the natural world. It wasn’t until moving to the states that she found the artistic outlet for this passion. Developing her skills in oil painting eventually lead her to another art form-scratchboard. The extremely fine detail wonderfully portrays fur, feathers and other textures and then the life like quality is accomplished by carefully adding watercolors in the scratches.

About Gregg

Growing up in the rural Midwest offered Gregg Murray the opportunity to spend much of his time outdoors, and to develop his dedicated love of nature. This appreciation of wildlife is evident, first, in his early field-sketches and drawings, and now, in his favorite medium...scratchboard.

Beginning as heavy, clay-coated paper-based art board, the original white surface is covered with black India ink. This dried ink is then scratched away, using a sharp metal-tipped tool, to produce the image.

Having worked with Scratchboard for over thirty years, Gregg has developed a technique of applying color into the white scratches, then carefully buffing any excess color off the black base. By adding color to the normally black and white art form, Gregg believes he can offer some of the best of two worlds...the texture and detail of an etching, with the realism and beauty of color.
